Du Pont: New Istanbul Ataturk Airport terminal uses laminated glass with Butacite throughout
The new international terminal building in Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport uses 39,000 sqm of laminated safety glass incorporating DuPont Butacite PVB throughout. Sisecam of Istanbul, Turkey supplied the glass for the project. Technical Services Manager, Yucel Akyurek told LGN: “Laminated glass is used for the façade, roof and most of the interiors of the new terminal. The architect, Ebru Kantasi Behlil, specified laminated glass with azure blue Butacite for the façade (4 mm glass x 0.76 mm PVB x 4 mm glass) with IMF 70, Sisecam’s neutral, multi-functional, Low-E climate control coating. This gives 1.7 watts per m2 Kelvin U-value, 52% shading co-efficient and 70% light transmission, ensuring that the building is environmentally efficient - saving on air conditioning in summer and heating in winter. The airport terminal’s roof is made of a series of gently-sloping pyramids. While three sides of each pyramid are of opaque building materials, the third side is a double-glazed unit incorporating laminated glass (two panes of tempered glass with a 1.52 mm Butacite PVB interlayer). Laminated safety glass is typically required for the interior panels of overhead glazing by building codes throughout the world. The architect selected this solution for natural lighting with reduced glare.
