Extrusion Sector in India

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2001

The extrusion sector forms the largest category of plastic processing units (65,0%) in the country. India has around 14.000 units, mostly in the small-scale sector. Product applications include films, pipes, profiles and rods, filaments, wire products, cables, sheets and other formed products. Films account for the largest share (nearly 60,0%) of total capacity while pipes account for another 20,0%. Demand in the films category is estimated at over 0,86 million tons per annum by the year 2001-2002. This translates into a growth of nearly 12,0% per annum. Major growth drivers in this category include the increased preference for films in the dairy industry. Fibers, filaments and pipes, the second largest category, is projected to grow at nearly 14,0% per annum to reach a demand level of around 0,6 million tons per annum by the year 2001-2002. Future demand hinges on the increased consumption of fertilizers and the impetus given by the withdrawal of the Jute protection order. Growth drivers in this category include increased spending by the government on the infrastructure and irrigation sectors. Increase in the volumes of gas distributed by pipelines would also be a major growth driver in the future.

Plas Mec: New PVC dryblend mixer

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2001

Plas Mec Srl, Italy has recently developed a new batch dryblending system for PVC powder which promises faster, more efficient cycles. Called the CombiMix the high-intensity mixing chamber is shorter and fatter than in standard mixers, which means the blade tips travel faster while mixing the same volume of PVC powder, so frictional heat develops faster. The cylindrical cooling mixer is water-jacketed not only on the sidewalls, but also on the lid and end caps for faster cooling.
